Forty years after anti-apartheid activist Neil Aggett was found hanging from his cell at the infamous John Vorster Square police station, his partner, Elizabeth Floyd, had little hope with regard to the reopened inquest into his death.
But, on Friday, Floyd was vindicated when a judge ruled that Aggett's death was at the hands of the apartheid Security Branch police, and not a suicide. Aggett was found hanging in his cell in 1982, 70 days after being arrested. "It's 40 years later, and it is extraordinary that we reached this phase after such a long time. The first inquest was done under extremely interrogating circumstances.
