‘Needed to change my pants’: Aussie gold medal hope’s hilarious reveal over British champ
Silver medallist Australia 's Sam Williamson , gold medallist England's Adam Peaty and bronze medallist Scotland's Ross Murdoch pose with their medals the medal presentation ceremony for the men's 50m breaststroke swimming final at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre, on day five of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, central England, on August 2, 2022.
Australia's Sam Williamson competes in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke Final during the Australian Swimming Trials at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre on June 10, 2024. The Australian’s gold medal winning performance in the 50m breaststroke was the culmination of nearly two decades of hard work, of putting setbacks behind him to swim again and of being inspired by the examples of his mentors and mates to reach for the sun.
When Williamson stands on the blocks in Saint-Denis in Paris, he will do so wearing a big smile and sporting tattoos that tell the tale of his approach to swimming. Sam Williamson of Team Australia looks on during a Swimming training session ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at Paris La Defense Arena on July 24, 2024 in Paris, France. The ink on his skin is not the only reminder Williamson, who cites former Olympic silver medallists Christian Sprenger and Brenton Rickard as inspirations, has about the importance of making the most of your opportunities.

“The stadium was packed I was standing up next to the, at the time, undisputed champion of breaststroke in Adam Peaty, who is another idol of mine. “I won’t lie. I did hate swimming when I was a lot younger. No-one enjoys swimming lessons as a kid,” he said. He has aspirations of one day opening a wine bar serving the “best produce Victoria has to offer” and loves the coffee, food and wine culture in the southern capital.
The pair are friends and the current Dolphin was a guest at the wedding of the champion swimmer, who retired earlier this year, last October in the Yarra Valley. He shares the same coach as Horton in Craig Jackson and feels that he has a similar work ethic, though he was reluctant to isolate a training session as the single hardest he had endured.
