New report shows dire reality for S.A. renters whose cost-burdened housing carries a city's shame

SAN ANTONIO — Renters in every City Council district across San Antonio, and nearly half of them spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, according to a report by a nonprofit focused on housing equity.

The profiles are broken out by council district and include figures about types and ages of housing units, average rents, average median household income of renters and homeowners, and the percentage of units available to renters earning the minimum wage. Subsidized apartments are not distributed evenly across the city. Sixty percent of public housing units are in Districts 1 and 5 combined, which encompass neighborhoods on the West Side and from downtown north to Loop 410.

The average monthly rent paid by tenants is lowest in District 5, at $782, and highest in District 9, at $1,185.Rents in San Antonio up nearly 15 percent in May, marking fifth-straight monthly increase But pressure from residents and housing advocates concerned about displacement prompted Opportunity Home to retreat last year. The agency is working with Able City to create a master plan for the complex.District 2 has the highest number of units occupied by families with Section 8 vouchers, at 1,629.
