University of Hawaii researchers say 88% of Hanauma Bay’s sandy beach will be underwater by 2030.

The study concluded almost 88% of Hanauma Bay’s “usable beach” will be underwater by 2030. Researchers determined this by modeling what the “the lowest predicted sea level rise ” would be and combined it with the highest tide. “The predictions of the extent that sea level will impact the usable area at Hanauma Bay was eye-opening,” said, a researcher at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology, in a news release. “It will assist management in preparation to develop recommendations, other alternatives, and solutions.”
