Tatte Bakery & Restaurant chain in Boston fired nearly 60 employees after the IRS flagged their tax filings as potentially fraudulent. The company claimed the employees' names, social security numbers, and addresses did not match IRS records, a common issue when migrants use fake documents or stolen identities to work in the U.S. Tatte gave employees several days to provide proper identification and tax information, but those who failed were considered to have resigned. The company even offered to pay for immigration lawyers and a $4,000 fund for expenses. This unusual move by Tatte signals a potential shift in employer practices regarding IRS 'no-match' letters.
Nearly 60 workers of a Boston-area bakery and restaurant chain have quit their job after the IRS flagged their tax filings as possibly fraudulent.
Company spokesperson Diana Pisciotta said Tatte “cares deeply about its team members and provides multiple opportunities for our team to correct data that the government has informed us is incorrect.” To avoid accusations of “racism,” Tatte even offered to pay for immigration lawyers for the employees who quit over the IRS fraud alert, and offered a fund of $4,000 to help them pay expenses.
