Nearly a half-century after Dawn Momohara’s body was found, Gideon Castro, 66, was arrested in a Utah nursing home and charged with her murder.

Police determined at the time that she had been strangled and possibly sexually assaulted, but a suspect would not be identified for decades. In the days following the murder, Castro and his brother, William, were questioned by police along with numerous other classmates. Gideon Castro told police then that he had met Momohara at a school dance in 1976. He said his last interaction with her was at a school carnival in February 1977, when he told her he was in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Police also canvassed the neighborhood, carrying around photographs of Momohara and asked residents if they had seen her on the Sunday she left to go shopping, another article said. It wasn’t clear whether she ever made it to the Ala Moana Center, where she told her mother she was going to meet with friends.
