ANKARA, Turkey — A 7.8 magnitude earthquake Monday was blamed for at nearly 30 deaths and caused the collapse and pancaking of an unknown number of buildings in a region that includes southeast Turkey and Syria.Eighteen fatalities were counted in Turkey so far, and 11 more were reported in Syria, local and provincial officials said.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management agency, AFAD, said the quake measured 7.4 and was centered in the town of Pazarcik, in Kahramanmaras province.A destroyed building in Turkey's Kahramanmaras province on Monday.President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said search-and-rescue teams have been sent to the region.

The temblor near the northern border of Syria was followed by that 6.7 earthquake roughly 11 minutes later, the survey said.
