The Liberal Democrats, which uncovered the school playing field sell offs after analysing Department for Education figures, called on the candidates to reverse the decline in school playing fields and support girls’ access to sport to ensure England’s victory at the Women’s Euro 2022 “has a lasting legacy for young women across the country.”

Although details of several of the DfE’s “decisions on the disposal of school land” included details of other sports facilities to replace those lost, a Lib Dem source said often this means schools replacing playing fields with indoor facilities, for examples. “That still means that those children are losing a playing field, it still means they’re selling off the family silver for a quick buck,” the source said.“If they sell off a rugby and football field to help fund an indoor hockey pitch children are still losing out on opportunities.
