JOHOR BARU: There have been twice the number of bush and forest fires this month with almost 100 reported daily across the country, says Fire and Rescue Department deputy director-general (operations) Datuk Edwin Galan Teruki.
He said firemen have been busy responding to these cases, adding that there was an average of only 40 daily cases recorded in March.
“These figures also include the burning of rubbish and slash-and-burn activities at farms around the country,” he said in an interview. “We have mobilised almost 50 firemen, and the fire is expected to take some time to be extinguished,” he said.“Rain in some of the states helped extinguish some fires and improve the air quality in the area,” he added.In anticipation of the dry season, he said, the department had frozen leave for 80% of its personnel until the end of the month.
