More than a billion pounds from the UK’s Overseas Development Assistance was spent within the UK in 2021 – including on asylum hotels – and the amount is expected to rise in 2022’s figure 🔴 mollyblackall reports:
Mr Jenrick insisted that the budget was still being spent on vulnerable people, albeit those which had now moved to the UK, but admitted the Government needed to “bear down on excessive costs”.
Speaking to the committee on Wednesday afternoon, Mr Jenrick said that the budget was used out of necessity to enable the Government to meet its obligations to those arriving on UK soil, adding that “those obligations do carry a significant cost” and insisted the practice was “entirely in line with longstanding traditions and the Development Assistance Committee rules.”
But members of the International Development Committee questioned why the money could not come from elsewhere and suggested that spending foreign aid in the UK was taking money from humanitarian disasters around the world.from 0.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent of the UK’s GDP.The Government was previously criticised for itsafter it emerged that it amounted to less than 5p for each person affected.
“We’re concerned that £1 spent settling the bill on a hotel in Britain might have been better spent on food, clean drinking water or shelter and stability for the world’s poorest people.
