Analysis of early modern human genomes suggests that Neanderthal DNA was introduced to populations in Europe around 43,500 to 50,500 years ago.

The study indicates that Neanderthal gene flow, including traits like skin color and immune response, played a crucial role in human evolution.Illustration of the Zlatý kůň/Ranis group. Around 45,000 years ago, individuals from Ranis in Germany and Zlatý kůň in Czechia likely traveled together across the open steppe landscapes of Europe.Recent research on ancient genomes spanning 50,000 years has shed light on the interactions between early modern humans and Neanderthals .

“We know that Ranis and Zlatý kůň individuals also overlapped in time with Neanderthals in Europe, but they only carry Neanderthal ancestry that is also common to all people outside of Africa today,”between 2016 and 2022, provided a treasure trove of information. Thousands of bone fragments were painstakingly analyzed, revealing connections to one of the earliest modern human groups in Europe.

“The timing is really important because it has direct implications on our understanding of the timing of the out-of-Africa migration as most non-Africans today inherit 1-2% ancestry from Neanderthals,”Priya Moorjani, an assistant professor of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley, in the press release.like skin color, immune response, and metabolism in modern humans.
