A potent cold front is set to deliver much-needed rain to Northeast Ohio just in time for Thursday morning’s commute, along with a drop of nearly 20 degrees from Wednesday’s highs.

A potent cold front is expected to sweep across Northeast Ohio from the west overnight Wednesday into Thursday, bringing about half an inch of rain to the region.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Commuters in Northeast Ohio may want the umbrella and a jacket Thursday morning, as a potent cold front brings much-needed rain and a sharp cooldown to the region.

Before the front arrives, Wednesday will feature sunny skies and high temperatures in the low 80s. The last time highs got into that range was on Aug. 23, when the thermometer topped out at 81 degrees at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Clouds will increase late Wednesday before showers move in from the west overnight. Rain is expected to linger into Thursday, which could slow down the morning commute. Some needed rain coming our way with a potent cold front tonight into Thursday. Thunder is possible. After upper 70s to lower 80s today, temperatures will be back into the 60s for Thursday.Since the front will move through at a decent clip, rainfall totals aren’t expected to be especially heavy, forecasters wrote in. Widespread amounts of about a half-inch are expected for most of the region before the front pushes east by Thursday evening. A rumble of thunder and locally heavier rainfall amounts are possible, but the risk of severe weather remains minimal thanks to a lack of instability in the air, forecasters noted. Any rain to the region will be beneficial, with August ending about 1.64 inches below normal, according to weather records. In addition to rain, the cold front will usher in a sharp drop in temperatures across Northeast Ohio. After climbing into the low 80s on Wednesday, highs on Thursday will struggle to get much beyond the mid to upper 60s. That’s a nearly 20-degree swing in less than a day, thanks to the combination of clouds, rain and cooler air spilling in behind the front.A cold front Wednesday into Thursday will bring a nearly 20-degree temperature swing and some much-needed rain to Northeast Ohio.Northeast Ohio will get a brief break from the wet weather Friday — with a mix of sun and clouds and highs in the mid 70s — before a secondary cold front brings another chance for rain overnight. With drier air in place, this front isn’t expected to be much of a rainmaker. As it sweeps across the region, a few showers may develop, especially east of the Interstate 71 corridor, forecasters said. The other feature of Friday’s cold front will be breezy conditions. Wind gusts around 25 mph or higher will be possible across the area on Friday before dying down behind the front Saturday morning. Cooler air will return for Saturday, with highs back down in the mid 60s and overnight lows dipping into the upper 40s. A few lake-effect rain showers will be possible in Lake and Ashtabula counties. By Sunday and into early next week, high pressure will settle over the Great Lakes, delivering a stretch of dry, crisp weather. Highs will hold in the upper 60s to low 70s, while overnight lows dip into the 40s.Northeast Ohio Tuesday weather forecast: Another sunny day If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
