A season that was on the brink of extinction because of a COVID-19 outbreak ended up in an NCS Division II championship for Salesian.

DANVILLE — In December and January, when Salesian High was hit with a seemingly endless run of bad luck having mostly to do with the COVID-19 virus, the thought of raising a North Coast Section title pennant seemed almost unthinkable.

Salesian, 13-8, lost a big chunk of its season because of COVID-19, with a number of players coming back from a preseason tournament in Las Vegas with the virus and then losing others because opponents couldn’t play for the same reason. Mellis estimates a dozen players and coaches were affected by the virus at various times.

Senior Austin Johnson led Salesian with 12 points, with Tyler Harris adding 10 and Evan Goodwin 10. For San Ramon Valley, Mason Thomas scored 10 points, with Parker McClaughery adding nine and Duke Beardsley nine.
