NCAA baseball regionals feature no lack of players from Houston-area high schools

Texas A&M’s Trevor Werner, a Klein graduate, is among the many players from Houston-area schools competing in this year’s NCAA baseball tournament.The road to Omaha begins Friday, with the top 64 baseball teams in the NCAA competing in 16 regional brackets.

Faith West Academy’s Marshall Wales has started eight of his 17 appearances, compiling a 5.44 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 48 innings. Santa Fe’s Rome Shubert has struck out 24 in 26⅓ innings, spanning 20 games, with a 7.18 ERA. No. 5 national seed LSU has received seven pitching appearances from Richmond native Javen Coleman, who missed most of 2022 due to injury and has struck out 19 in 12 ⅔ innings.The Texas Longhorns and Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns combine for 11 area alumni, both led offensively by a local grad.has a team-high 1.050 OPS and 63 runs for Texas , as well as 12 home runs, 44 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.

Louisiana reached Coral Gables with the help of Fulshear’s Julian Brock, who has a team-best 1.016 OPS, 11 home runs and 62 RBIs, to go with 51 runs. Lake Creek’s Shane Sdao has started two of his 19 appearances as a true freshman, recording 37 strikeouts and a 4.89 ERA in 35 innings. High school teammate Ty Sexton has made two starts as well, posting a 6.26 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 23 innings.

Barbers Hill’s Bret Copeland and Needville’s Thomas Schreck have contributed off the bench for the Black Knights.
