A Western North Carolina sheriff has taken to social media to claim that a TikTok influencer has been using the platform to spread misinformation about Helene.

Areas of heavy lake effect snow are likely during this time.A Western North Carolina sheriff has taken to social media to claim that a TikTok influencer has been using the platform to spread misinformation about Helene recovery.on Friday, Dec. 6, Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin spoke about some people who have "ulterior motives" and are "trying to make a profit" from the spread of misinformation.

Griffin added that it was to the point where some of the West Virginia coal miners "disassociated themselves from this videographer," identified as Phillips. Griffin claimed this is due to Phillips' "ulterior motive" of making money from the videos he posts on TikTok. The sheriff said there is a lot of misinformation being spread online, not only through David James Phillips, but other TikTok accounts, as well.

"Just because somebody puts something on TikTok, doesn't mean it's true, especially in this case," Griffin said. "We'll see if your information stands up to the facts because I can assure you I've done a lot more research about this than you have. While you sit there behind your desk in your cozy little office, I am out here in the disaster zone, freezing my off, serving the community that you should be serving."
