The San Antonio Spurs made the easiest NBA draft decision in 20 years last June when they selected Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick. When the 7-foot-4 French phenom took New York City by storm, he completely overshadowed the rest of his class. His formidable presence remains 12 months later. The 2024 draft class lacks a headliner with Wembanyama’s maturity, superhero dimensions or well-rounded game — let alone all three in a single package.
This year’s draft, which has drawn comparisons to the underwhelming 2013 edition, is headlined by Frenchmen Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr. If Wembanyama, the unanimous 2023 rookie of the year, feels like an unfair standard, consider that Cooper Flagg, a 17-year-old forward from Maine who is headed to Duke, probably would be picked first this year if he were eligible. Brace for a letdown and a crapshoot when the first round unfolds Wednesday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
