Bill Walton, a two-time NBA champion and hall of famer, died from cancer on Monday. He was 71.
Walton, a 6’11” center, was the first overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers during the 1974 draft. He went on to win the team a championship in 1977 and notched another NBA title with the Boston Celtics. He later worked as a“Bill Walton was truly one of a kind,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a. “As a Hall of Fame player, he redefined the center position.
After ending his professional career with the Celtics in 1988, Walton transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting. Silver described Walton’s commentary as “insightful and colorful” and noted that he entertained generations of basketball fans. Walton was also known as a fan of the Grateful Dead.
In addition to his two championships, Walton was named the league’s most valuable player in 1978 and was a two-time NBA All-Star. He also won his alma mater, UCLA, two NCAA championships and left such a mark on the university that it retired his number.The NBA star leaves behind his wife Lori and four sons.
