“I’m never going to change the way I play basketball,” Green said the day after his ejection.
In the hours following the ejection, Fitzgerald spoke to a pool reporter regarding the decision to call a Flagrant 2 on Green and said his contact against Grizzlies big man Brandon Clarke was “unnecessary and excessive which leads to a flagrant foul penalty two and ejection.
” Fitzgerald and his crew, which included James Williams and Gediminas Petraitis, consulted with the NBA replay center following the foul and determined a Flagrant 2 was the correct call. The NBA reviews all flagrant fouls and could have downgraded the call to a Flagrant 1 following the game, but decided not to make a change. “I have no reaction,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said in response to the league’s decision. “We’re powerless in this stuff so whatever the league decides, whatever the referees decide, that’s what stands.” In evaluating Green’s actions against Clarke, Fitzgerald said, “The first part was the wind-up and significant contact to the face, and then the pull down from the jersey grab and throw down to the floor to an airborne vulnerable player makes that unnecessary and excessive. That’s what led to the flagrant foul penalty two.” Friday’s game between the Warriors and Mavericks is not the first time Fitzgerald has worked a Warriors game since Green was ejected. The 12th-year NBA ref was also the lead official for Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals between Golden State and Memphis, a game the Warriors won 110-96 to clinch a series victory. The Warriors hold a 1-0 series lead in the Western Conference finals after defeating the Mavericks 112-87 at the Chase Center on Wednesday.
