The Navy has established 'Unmanned Surface Vessel Division One' to further autonomous-vessel technology
A new unmanned vessel division established by the San Diego-based Naval Surface Forces will expand the services’ testing and operation of unmanned surface ships in Southern California, the Navy announced Friday.
“I am all in on the Navy’s unmanned effort,” Capt. Jeff Heames, who until Friday had been in charge of the development squadron that includes the new unmanned division, said at a press briefing Monday.So-called USVs have been undergoing tests in recent years, but their success is not guaranteed. The Navy has struggled with other expensive technology ventures in the recent past, including with the Zumwalt class of destroyers, littoral combat ships and the $13 billion aircraft carrier Gerald Ford.
“I see tremendous opportunity to increase the lethality of our surface forces with some of the payloads and USV operating modes we’re exploring,” Heames said. “They can operate in places we wouldn’t necessarily want to have humans. You can place them in places to sense the environment. Having an adjunct magazine to shoot increases the firepower.”
