George Lee's perch as co-Head of Goldman Sachs Global Institute affords him remarkable insights into topics as diverse as geopolitics and generative AI.
George Lee is a veteran of Goldman Sachs , having recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with the firm. His journey is anything but conventional—transitioning from an investment banking leader of the bank’s Technology, Media and Telecom group to to spending four years as the company’s co-chief information officer to becoming a co-head of the Goldman Sachs Global Institute in October of 2022.
"We sit in a room, we have all of our methods to collect inputs," Lee explained. His approach involves forming hypotheses, traveling to meet world leaders and rigorously testing the ideas. Critically, they leverage the vast Goldman Sachs network, finding experts within the 45,000-person organization who can provide deep, specialized insights.
"We thought Sam Altman was crazy at $7 trillion," Lee noted, referencing the massive investments in AI technology. He raised critical questions about the return on such enormous spending, suggesting that traditional ROI measures might be insufficient. Instead, he proposed viewing AI investments"as a set of nested options" for technology developers and hyperscalers.
