Published: Jan. 25, 2025, 5:33 a.m.Terry Pluto, cleveland.com“I love my boyfriend of 10 years very much and I know he loves me. However, he has a daughter who is a young adult and attends college a few hours away. From the beginning of our relationship, my boyfriend shared custody of his daughter. He wouldn’t go anywhere with me when his daughter was with him.
““I love the fact that my boyfriend is such a loving, caring and devoted father. But always taking a backseat to his daughter is troubling to me. Not sure if I’m overreacting or taking it too much to heart. I’m hoping to gain some insight and possibly a different perspective on this.” As my friend Bishop Joey Johnson likes to say, “OK, everyone … say ‘Family Mess!’ "“While the divorce rate of first marriages in the U.S. is 43%, the rate for second marriages is 67%, and for third marriages, a whopping 73%,”“Sounds pretty grim. But like any life event, second and third marriages come with both dangers and opportunities.”
That’s especially true if there has been a divorce. Suddenly, kids may have “two homes,” bouncing back and forth every other week … or weekend.“Blended families generally begin with two adults who have had a loss by the death or divorce of a partner, decide to marry, and want to blend their children into a family.”
My sense is reactions like these are driven by fear of what comes next. Another factor is kids feeling they somehow caused the divorce. I’m not an expert, but I have a lot of friends in these type of marriage. The ones who seem happiest understand that the children will usually have a special place in the heart of the divorced parent. That means it will often seem like the kids “come first.”
