A team member seeks advice from Miss Manners regarding colleagues with poor table manners, who struggle to secure second dates. Miss Manners suggests a mentor from the team can help them navigate the social aspects of a professional environment.

Team lunches and dinners, consisting of both supervisors and associates, are frequent occurrences for my department. These gatherings, often informal, take place after a week of collaborative effort. The nature of our industry involves temporary relocation; we typically spend a few months in one city before moving to another. Despite this transient environment, a strong camaraderie exists within the team; we support each other.

However, a specific challenge arises from two team members in their twenties who exhibit notably poor table manners. Their actions are quite noticeable: they place bread directly on the table surface, contaminate the table with used cutlery, and meticulously cut their entire meals into tiny pieces, reminiscent of toddler behavior. Although I could provide further examples, these instances paint a clear picture. Despite their education and generally pleasant demeanor, they are consistently unsuccessful in securing second dates after dining at nice restaurants, and I empathize with their predicament. I am fully cognizant that advising them on proper dinner roll buttering techniques is not part of my job description; nonetheless, I experience concern and, at times, embarrassment on their behalf. Given this situation, am I simply expected to accept the situation and do nothing? \It is certainly true that the lines between professional and personal interactions have become increasingly blurred. However, in the past, a promising individual who lacked the social graces necessary for polite company was understood to be at a significant disadvantage in a professional setting. Experienced mentors often played a crucial role in mitigating such shortcomings. A potential solution could involve identifying a more senior team member who would serve as a professional mentor for the two individuals in question. This mentor could focus on providing guidance beyond just table manners, incorporating aspects of professional development. Such mentoring could positively influence their career trajectories, thus, avoiding the need to promise improved dating prospects based solely on enhanced etiquette. Beyond the immediate issue, this kind of mentorship reflects a commitment to supporting the growth and development of the team members, and the mentor can help them navigate the social aspects of a professional environment. In essence, the proposed approach moves beyond the surface-level problem of table manners to foster comprehensive individual development. \Finding a suitable mentor is key. The role would involve offering advice and guidance, and the mentor should create opportunities for the two team members to refine their social skills, including dining etiquette. This is important to help the team members to present themselves professionally in business and social settings. The mentor could help them practice by offering informal coaching sessions or by guiding them on navigating social situations. The goal is not just about teaching them about fork use but helping them to navigate the social aspects of a professional environment. The focus will be on understanding that a strong professional demeanor involves a range of interpersonal skills and the mentor needs to create a safe space for the team members to learn and develop those skills. This initiative can foster a stronger sense of team unity and mutual support, which in turn benefits the entire department. Furthermore, addressing this issue proactively can contribute to a more professional and polished image for the team, strengthening its overall reputation and success. Implementing such a strategy highlights the significance of soft skills in the professional world, emphasizing the need for comprehensive development beyond technical capabilities
