These closures, scheduled between April and June 2024, are part of the bank's larger strategy to prioritize digital banking services. Since January 2015, NatWest Group, which also owns Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has closed a total of 1,431 branches, including 48 last year and 20 in 2023.
The bank cites a shift in customer behavior towards digital banking as the primary reason for these closures. Over 80% of active current account holders now utilize NatWest's digital services, and more than 97% of retail accounts are opened online.NatWest emphasizes its commitment to supporting customers during this transition. They are investing over £20 million in 2025 to enhance their remaining branch network, improve customer service, modernize branch aesthetics, and reduce environmental impact. With businesses increasingly favoring card payments, cash is projected to account for only 21% of purchases by 2026.
