Peter Dutton’s insistence on Jacinta Price as the new opposition Indigenous Australians spokeswoman has given the Nationals a disproportionate presence in the shadow cabinet.
has given the Nationals a disproportionate presence in the shadow cabinet, because leader David Littleproud refused to dump another shadow minister to make way for her.
Sources said Mr Dutton discussed with Mr Littleproud that he would have to demote one other Nationals shadow cabinet minister to make way for Senator Price and keep the Nationals’ representation at six.But Mr Littleproud refused, telling Mr Dutton the problem was not of the Nationals’ making, and he was not demoting anyone. Senator Price was appointed anyway and the Nationals now have seven shadow cabinet ministers.
Even if Mr Littleproud had wanted to accede to Mr Dutton’s request, it would have been perilous given old leadership tensions still simmer in the party. Of the other three, Susan McDonald and Kevin Hogan are friends and allies, leaving only Barnaby Joyce.

Jacinta Price announced as incoming Shadow Indigenous Affairs MinisterOpposition Leader Peter Dutton says incoming Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Jacinta Nampijinpa Price will do an “outstanding job” leading the charge for better practical outcomes by contrasting the Prime Minister's Voice to Parliament. “She’s always fought hard to improve the lives of Indigenous women and kids and we’ve seen that just in recent days … I’m incredibly proud of the work she’s been able to do, that she continues to do, and I know that she’ll do an outstanding job in leading the charge for better practical outcomes for Indigenous Australians, not through the Prime Minister’s Canberra Voice bureaucracy,” Mr Dutton said.
