An FDA report reveals food safety violations at a McDonald's onion supplier, Taylor Farms, linked to a nationwide E. coli outbreak that sickened over 100 people across 14 states. The report details concerns about contamination, hygiene, and sanitation practices at the Taylor Farms facility.

A recent report from the Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) reveals concerning food safety violations at Taylor Farms , a supplier to McDonald's, linked to a nationwide outbreak of E. coli bacteria that sickened at least 100 people across 14 states. The FDA report, obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request, details the agency's inspection of a Taylor Farms food production facility in Colorado.

The inspection uncovered numerous food safety concerns, including a lack of proper contamination control, dirty equipment, and areas where recontamination of environmental pathogens could occur. The outbreak was traced back to contaminated slivered onions produced by Taylor Farms, primarily those used on McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers. The outbreak emerged in late October 2024, ultimately leading to 104 documented cases, 34 hospitalizations, and tragically, one death. While other fast food chains temporarily removed their onion products as a precaution, the outbreak was solely linked to fresh slivered onions supplied by Taylor Farms. Taylor Farms subsequently issued a large recall of its other onion products, but no further cases outside of McDonald's were reported. McDonald's, after switching to a different onion supplier, quickly returned Quarter Pounders and slivered onions to its menu. By early December, government health officials declared the outbreak over. However, the FDA report highlights glaring problems at Taylor Farms that may have allowed the outbreak to occur in the first place. The FDA inspections, conducted between October 28 and November 12, 2024, revealed several instances of inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices. Inspectors found equipment with apparent biofilm and food debris, areas susceptible to recontamination, and production rooms kept at temperatures conducive to bacterial growth. Additionally, workers did not consistently use hand sanitizers when handling ready-to-eat foods, and cutting boards used for lettuce and celery were heavily discolored with deep cracks and crevices, posing potential contamination risks. In a statement to CBS News, Taylor Farms acknowledged the FDA observations and asserted that they have taken steps to address the identified issues. The company maintains its confidence in its food safety processes and the quality and safety of its products. While food safety in the U.S. has improved over the past decade, with reported foodborne illnesses declining, the country is still striving to reach the lower rates of foodborne disease set as a goal for 2030. This incident, though less severe than outbreaks in the past, serves as a reminder that the food supply chain remains vulnerable to contamination and the importance of maintaining vigilant food safety practices
