Texas Tech catcher Kevin Bazzell tops the Nationals’ draft list from Day 2 of the MLB draft as the team adds depth behind Keibert Ruiz.
Look, for a second, beyond the MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams and James Wood types. Jake Irvin and Mitchell Parker carry sub-4.00 ERAs atop the Washington Nationals’ rotation. Jacob Young has graded out as one of the best defensive center fielders in MLB. Trey Lipscomb is another excellent fielder who is expected to be the team’s everyday third baseman for the rest of the season.

Atop their depth chart, Keibert Ruiz, 25, is signed through 2030 but is hitting just .220 and has yet to firmly entrench himself in the role, while Riley Adams and Drew Millas appear lodged into roles as backups.
Smiling throughout a Zoom availability Monday, Lomavita mentioned that he only began catching full-time last year, but adapted to the defensive responsibilities quickly and was named to the all-defensive team in the Pac-12. He liked that the position doesn’t come with much credit. Haas has scouted Lomavita since high school and mentioned his character as a key factor in the selection.
“We’re pretty excited about how it unfolded,” Haas said. “We were able to attack up the middle positionally again, get some guys who can hit who have power and snuck in some potential starting pitchers as well.”
