The National Western Stock Show in Denver is undergoing a period of both transformation and continuity. While the iconic Livestock Exchange building is closing its doors after 25 years, the show itself continues to attract both city dwellers and ranchers, showcasing the enduring appeal of this annual event.

The National Western Stock Show, a beloved Denver tradition, is facing both change and continuity this year. While the iconic livestock exchange is closing its doors after 25 years, the show itself continues to thrive, attracting both city dwellers and ranchers alike. The icy weather caused a slight hiccup in the traditional longhorn parade, but the herd will be back at various events throughout the Stock Show's run, lasting until January 26th.

One of the most significant changes this year is the major overhaul of the National Western Center. This will be the last year for the current Livestock Exchange building as its lease is up in April. The new owners plan a major construction project that will replace the beloved bar that has served cowboys and stock show attendees until 2 a.m. While much of the project is funded by the expanded lodging tax Denver voters approved to support the renovation of the Colorado Convention Center, corporations and private citizens have stepped up to sponsor various components of the campus. Colorado State University is also playing a role in the revitalization, turning the historic Stadium Arena, completed in 1908, into a year-round business hub. Although it will see less use during the traditional January events, the arena will remain a landmark and be developed into some amenity for the neighborhood that has endured years of construction. Traditional Stock Show activities like sheep shearing, mutton busting, and funnel cake eating will still take place, though perhaps in a slightly different format. The Stock Show's first weekend saw a mix of city slickers drawn to the rural charm and actual ranchers celebrating their profession. Both groups enjoyed the shopping, from irrigation pumps to expensive art by sixth-generation Coloradan Duke Beardsley, the featured artist in the Coors Western Art Show. The energy and excitement of the Stock Show remained palpable, showcasing the enduring appeal of this annual event
