Several thousand protesters gathered at a square in the capital Pretoria preparing to march to the Union Buildings, the seat of government, where police and troops were on patrol.Eight-seven protestors were arrested for violence-related offences overnight, according to the police.

"The damage that the Ramaphosa government is causing is so terrible that we cannot tolerate it any longer. They must go now," he told AFP."They have proven beyond doubt that they cannot rule this country, that they cannot manage this country," he said. The authorities said they were on high alert to maintain security, with nearly 3,500 troops available to assist police.

Most shops across the country protectively pulled their shutters down, and one Pretoria auto dealership had removed all vehicles from its display. People have the freedom to demonstrate, but "no-one should be forced, threatened or intimidated into joining that protest," Ramaphosa said on Monday in his weekly newsletter.

South Africa on Alert as Protesters Embark on National ShutdownSouth Africa on Alert as Protesters Embark on National ShutdownProtests planned by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) across the nation have prompted law enforcement to be on high alert. Some officers clashed with demonstrators on the evening ahead of the National Shutdown, according to Scrolla. This comes after a judgment by the Gauteng High Court which interdicted the EFF from "violating the rights of South Africans to work school, and trade, by any means of intimidation, violence, or coercion, on the party's planned national shutdown". Preparation by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure saw efforts to heighten police visibility in response. Meanwhile, the SA National Taxi Council refused to participate in the national shutdown as participation would cost the U.S.$3.2 billion industry a loss of industry of over U.S.$8.1 million for one day. In the days leading up to the action, EFF leader Julius Malema said that only President Cyril Ramaphosa's resignation could prevent the planned national shutdown. The opposition party voiced its intention to mobilise hundreds of its members, along with citizens, in their demand for an end to load shedding. The EFF called on businesses and factories across the country to close on the day of the action in order to "avoid the looting".
