National Nurses United (NNU) is redirecting significant resources toward critical races tHat could determine the political composition of Congress, as Democrats aim to retake the majority. The union's super PAC has directly supported the Working Families Party and progressive candidates aligned with democratic socialism, including Chan in San Francisco and others like Analilia Mejia and Aisha Wahab. The investments align with NNU's advocacy for Medicare for All and its stance against charter schools and Trump-era school choice initiatives, while also supporting pro-immigrant policies and progressive gubernatorial candidates.
While their ostensive purpose is to negotiate wages, employee benefits, and workplace conditions, these unions continue to pour resources into critical races that could change the political makeup of Congress, as Democrats seek to retake the majority in November and progressive challengers, leaning onTroy Jackson emerges as front-runner for Maine Democratic Senate nominationthis election cycle to candidates backed by the Working Families Party, a left-wing political party closely aligned with socialists such as Sen.to the WFP as “the closest thing there is to a political party that believes in my vision of democratic socialism.
” NNU’s super PAC, National Nurses United for Patient Protection, directly gave the WFP and its San Francisco branchretiring Rep. Nancy Pelosi . The Pelosi-backed Chan will face off against Democratic state Sen. Scott Weiner in the November general election for the speaker emerita’s deep-blue congressional district, which sits almost entirely within San Francisco’s city limits.
Chan is politically positioned to the left of Weiner, an LGBT activist, who has emerged as a relative centrist on other issues, aside from gay rights, in the context of San Francisco’s left-wing landscape. NNU has also given $3,000 each to other WFP-endorsed congressional contenders, including social justice activist Analilia Mejia; labor leader Bob Brooks; Mai Vang, a member of the Sacramento City Council who refuses to recite the Pledge of Alliance andto the American flag at council meetings; and Rep.
Eric Swalwell’s potential replacement Aisha Wahab, whose progressive platform has earned her the moniker, who stepped down from Congress after winning New Jersey’s governorship, and will battle it out again in November before finishing Sherrill’s term. Mejia, previously the political director of Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign, is co-director of the Center for Popular Democracy,“unapologetically demand transformational change for Black, brown, and low-income communities.
” The organization is allied with teachers unions to prevent the proliferation of charter schools, which operate independent of the public school system. Mejia, the daughter ofof Gov. Josh Shapiro to take back Lehigh Valley’s congressional seat, which national Democrats have set their sights on as one of the most likely to flip blue. NNU gave an additional; incumbent Rep.
Maxwell Frost ; and Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, who is seeking the Senate seat left by departing Sen. Dick Durbin .of advancing the government takeover of health insurance through a single-payer “Medicare for all” system.

“At this point, I simply cannot trust that any education policy coming from Trump’s White House is in the best interest of Oregon’s kids and our public education system,” Kotek said.
