USAA says only 46 percent of U.S. adults know that Memorial Day is a day to honor those who died while serving in the U.S. military.
WASHINGTON D.C. - As we celebrate Memorial Day weekend, we visit the Capitol where a wall of poppies pays tribute to the hundreds of thousands who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
"Memorial Day is all about remembering and honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice," explained US Army Major General John Richardson. To educate people about the true significance of the day, USAA is putting on its annual poppy wall of honor at the National Mall.More than 600,000 poppies are up this weekend on the eight and a half feet tall wall. Each flower represents a U.S, service member who lost their life in the line of duty since World War One."In addition to the 600,000 poppies on the wall is an LED immersive experience. As the visitors walk through the display, they will see a sea of poppies floating in the wind.
Since its first appearance on the National Mall in 2018, nearly 40,000 people have visited the temporary installation, paying their respects and learning more about the importance of Memorial Day.
