REPORTER: Prime Minister, we've had a lot of texts coming in. What are you doing to ease the cost of living?
ANTHONY ALBANESE: It is an example of what we want to achieve. Increasing density but doing it in a way that is sensitive with the local environment. LAURA TINGLE: Official figures show a widening gap between the rate of population growth and the number of new homes coming on to the market. What we are talking about here is working with a construction sector. We've obviously had a lot of conversations with the sector about what is achievable but also what is ambitious because we need to be ambitious in terms of turning around the housing challenges in Australia.
The significant planning, zoning, density reforms, better community consultation, fast tracking for social and affordable housing are all part of the reforms that will make a difference and turn this around. This is about making sure that we all head in the same direction. As I repeatedly keep saying, but importantly, Laura, this is about well-located homes for Australians.
We have offered the states and territories an additional one year for the housing and homelessness agreement while we negotiate another five-year arrangement from 1 July, 2024. LAURA TINGLE: Sure, you have added an extra 200,000 houses to the original target of one million today, from 2024 over five years. What is that number based on? Does it reflect the conditions in the market, or more information about what is achievable?
LAURA TINGLE: Sure. Now you have offered an extra $3 billion in incentive-style payments to undertake reforms to boost housing supply. What sort of changes are you hoping will come out of that? LAURA TINGLE: Now, there's not a lot in this for renters today, in terms of what the Greens were demanding but you are looking at an overall lift in rental standards. What is the minimum criteria that you are hoping rentals will have to satisfy if there is a uniform agreement on this from the states?
