Variety via Getty Imagesfollows Mel issa , played by Rothwell, as her life transforms following a near death experience. The show is humorous, relatable and full of characters you wish you could call up and invite to drinks.

The show doesn’t tiptoe around the stigma and discrimination faced by women in larger bodies. In one powerful scene, Mel quits a waitressing job and calls her boss a fatphobe before she storms off. “It was cathartic to do that scene,” shares Rothwell in an interview with me.

New York City’s bustling JFK airport is the primary setting of the show because it’s where Mel works. Of the location choice, Rothwell says that even early on in development she wanted to find a location that was rich in character. “New York City is a beautiful, wonderful petri dish of people.” She remarked that she sees the airport as a liminal space where she does a lot of dreaming. “You get to put an out-of-office reply on your email, and no one will bother you.

“For a long time, I didn't think that stories of love and romance and hope were allowed to be had by someone who looked like me. I didn't know I could be those things or have access to those things. The system is set up against us. The airplane seats aren't going to fit everyone, and you walk into a store and it might not have plus-size clothing.

Rothwell did plenty of work to get the cast, crew and writers room on board with a show that would address these loaded topics. She shares that she did some level-setting on day one. “I had a very frank open conversation with all cast and crew before I started production and just talked about how we’re not using the word 'fat' pejoratively here.
