Natalia Grossman is unstoppable. At least, that’s what it feels like when you watch her climb. In video of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, for instance, Grossman displays a breezy and cheerful demeanor, confidence radiating off of her as she flashes through routes that would stump less savvy competitors.
By 2019, she was racking up silver medals at the IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships, and at 17, she qualified for the Boulder World Cup semifinals. 2021 is largely regarded as Grossman’s breakout year, marking gold medal wins and a World Cup triumph over Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret, who had gone undefeated since 2018. Grossman finished the year with the number one world ranking in bouldering, and the number two ranking in lead climbing. But all the success didn’t come without some anxieties.
