The number of people experiencing chronic homelessness in Nashville has increased nearly 77% over the past year, according to Nashville's Homeless Management Information System. Last month there were 1,525 people in the city experiencing chronic homelessness compared to 863 a year prior. 'I’ve seen an increase in women and children.
There is not a way for these people to get up and running. They can’t get affordable housing. Sometimes they can’t get the treatment that they need for mental health,' she told WKRN. The fair market rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the Nashville area increased to $1,442, a nearly $200 rise from last year, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Young said without more affordable housing options, she fears the issue will worsen.
