A 17-year-old student died after fatally shooting himself following a shooting at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee , on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. CT in the school cafeteria. A male student, also 17, sustained a graze wound to his arm and was taken to the hospital in stable condition but has since been released. Another male student received treatment for a facial injury sustained from a fall.
Nashville Police Chief John Drake reported that the shooter took the school bus that morning and went to the bathroom, possibly to retrieve the weapon. He entered the cafeteria and fired multiple rounds, striking a student before turning the gun on himself. A student who witnessed the shooting recounted the horrifying experience, describing seeing people shot, on the ground, bleeding, and people running out the side door. He said he felt a lot of pain and grief after seeing people shot in front of him. Adrienne Battle, Director of Metro Nashville Public Schools, addressed the tragedy, stating that the district has implemented various safety measures over the years, including having a school resource officer. While acknowledging the limitations and unintended consequences of stationary metal detectors, she emphasized their ongoing exploration of emerging technologies and strategies to strengthen school safety. Gov. Bill Lee offered condolences and expressed gratitude for the swift response of law enforcement and first responders.
