It’s unclear what caused the issues, but the incident began at about 4 p.m. ET when travelers were first rushed away from Concourse C. Many could be seen on video covering their noses and mouths with their shirts and other fabrics.
“Another man at the bar where I was sitting was sneezing multiple times before we heard anything about the situation.” Passengers were directed to start leaving the terminal in droves before an official airport-wide announcement was made. Psihountas said that she and other passengers were initially concerned as rumors of a potential biohazard spread among evacuees. “[I’m] hoping it was just mace… I was getting nervous,” she said.
