NASCAR is expected to add Iowa Speedway to its 2024 Cup Series schedule, with an announcement likely to come as soon as Tuesday, sources briefed on the matter said. Additionally, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will also race at Iowa next year on June 15, according to sources briefed on the matter.
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’ office announced a news conference for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. CT to “announce a new major sports and entertainment event to be held in Iowa in 2024.” The track’s website briefly listed a “2024 NASCAR Weekend” for the Cup Series on June 16, 2024, before it was removed Monday.Iowa is a 0.875-mile oval in Newton, Iowa, about 35 miles east of Des Moines.
Adding Iowa to the 2024 schedule gives NASCAR another short track on its 38-race schedule with two points races apiece at Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and Martinsville Speedway, plus exhibition races at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and North Wilkesboro Speedway. Iowa’s addition to the schedule fills the void that opened when California Speedway was dropped from the 2024 schedule due to a proposed renovation project that would see its two-mile oval converted into a short track. NASCAR explored several options to replace California, located just outside Los Angeles, including extensive talks with the promoters of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal, before settling on Iowa.
The NASCAR industry was excited about the possibility of going to Montreal, but with those hopes diminishing, it seemed Iowa was for some reason tabbed as the next-best option for a new track on the 2024 schedule. It’s too bad the Next Gen car doesn’t race well on short tracks, but maybe some changes can be made before the race arrives next year.
