NASA SLS moon rocket 'wet dress rehearsal' at Kennedy Space Center a 45-hour test countdown. What's a wet dress rehearsal? We break it down for you byjensangalang

It's similar to a dress rehearsal in theater, or a full rehearsal of the show in full costume and makeup with tech and stage management, before opening night.A wet dress rehearsal simulates every stage of a rocket launch without the rocket actually leaving the pad. A dry run, if you will. However, what makes the practice launch countdown ais the act of filling the spacecraft's propellant tanks, resetting the countdown clock and draining the tanks.

It's ultimately a practice run and could inform managers on how to change the timeline on the actual launch day, now set for no earlier than June. The most critical part of the test, however, will be fully fueling the rocket and making sure it can stay safely pressurized with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen that will feed its four RS-25 engines on launch day. The engines are"recycled" from the space shuttle program and each flew on several missions. If NASA's"uncrewed" lunar mission is successful, future Artemis missions plan to land the first woman and first person of color on the moon.
