NASA has once again adjusted its plans for astronaut rotations at the International Space Station , bringing forward the launch date for the next crew by several weeks. The agency now aims to launch the new crew on March 12th, significantly earlier than the previously anticipated late March or April timeframe. This change will reduce the duration of the current crew's mission, comprising astronauts Josh Cassada and Andreas Mogensen, by at least a couple of weeks.
Their prolonged stay, which recently surpassed the eight-month mark, was initially intended to be a shorter endeavor following a week-long flight demonstration. However, the capsule intended for this mission encountered numerous difficulties during its journey to the space station, prompting NASA to make the decision to return it empty. The astronauts were subsequently reassigned to SpaceX. SpaceX's subsequent launch delay for the replacement crew, aboard a brand new capsule requiring additional preparation, further extended the current crew's stay. Faced with anticipated ongoing work for the new capsule, NASA opted to utilize an older capsule for its next crew launch. This capsule, originally slated for a private crew mission organized by Axiom Space, featuring astronauts from Poland, Hungary, and India, has been temporarily postponed. The private flight is expected to take place later in the spring. NASA prioritizes having a new crew arrive before the existing crew departs, ensuring a continuous presence on the space station.
