as it tapped the moon’s gravity to sling itself into lunar orbit, Artemis mission leaders said. Orion will remain in that orbit this week testing its systems.

Hu, Flight Director Judd Frielding and Artemis 1 Mission Manager Mike Sarafin used words like “giddy” and “amazed” to describe the feelings of NASA team members to the success so far. There are no signs of damage to Orion from the launch, and Sarafin said the only damage worth noting was to the mobile launcher’s elevator. Its door was blown off its mounts by the blast from Artemis, Sarafin said, and crews are having to climb the stairs to reach the upper levels.
