I'm an award-winning journalist writing about the night sky and eclipses.

A red giant star and white dwarf orbit each other in this animation of a nova similar to T CoronaeFor professional and amateur astronomers, it’s set to be a once-in-a-lifetime event like no other—despite it happening about 3,000 years ago.

A star that’s typically impossible to see from Earth other than with a telescope will burn brightly for a few days, becoming visible to the naked eye.“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event that will create a lot of new astronomers out there, giving young people a cosmic event they can observe for themselves, ask their own questions, and collect their own data,”Dr.

T CrB is two stars in a binary system consisting of an aging red giant star and a smaller white dwarf. The latter is where the action will happen. A remnant of a long-dead star, this white dwarf is pulling hydrogen from its neighbor onto its surface, the pressure and heat of which will soon cause a thermonuclear explosion. However, unlike during a supernova, the star will survive this smaller nova explosion. An abbot in Germany observed T CrB in 1217, though it was last seen from Earth in 1946.

How will we know when T CrB appears in the night sky? “Using social media and email, they’ll send out instant alerts, and the flag goes up,” said Dr. Elizabeth Hays, chief of the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory at NASA Goddard about citizen scientists and space enthusiasts. “We’re counting on that global community interaction again with T CrB.
