NASA is releasing the first images from the new telescope this week. Thirteen billion years of cosmic history were distilled into one glittering image Monday, when President Joe Biden revealed the first dispatch from the James Webb Space Telescope.

Launched on Christmas Day from French Guiana on the northernmost edge of South America, Webb traveled more than one million miles from Earth to its current location. The mission is expected to last more than a decade.“That blows my mind — a million miles into the cosmos,” Biden said. “It’s astounding to me.”

First conceived in 1996 as a successor to the vaunted Hubble Space Telescope, the infrared telescope was designed to shed light on the formation of our solar system, capturing information about the earliest galaxies that formed 100 million years after the Big Bang.Until Tuesday afternoon, the image had been glimpsed only by a handful of agency administrators.

That group includes Rice University’s Pat Hartigan, who for 20 years has dreamt of using Webb’s groundbreaking discoveries in his research on star formation. Yet the perennially delayed project always seemed “years from completion,” Hartigan said.
