Marshall Space Flight Center engineers are stress-testing mockups of parts of the Boeing craft's propulsion system.

Engineers at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center are working on one of a pair of problems that have kept two astronauts aboard the International Space Station for weeks longer than anticipated.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams launched June 5 in the first crewed test flight of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft on a mission to the station that was expected to last about eight days. Starliner is a partly reusable craft with a capsule that can hold up to seven astronauts, designed to deliver crew to the station or other low-Earth orbit destinations.

The craft is one of two NASA intends to use in its Commercial Crew Program, which contracts with private operators to transport astronauts. SpaceX’s Crew Dragon craft began flying in 2020, while a successful crewed flight was the next step in Boeing’s certification process.
