NASA has selected the astronauts for the upcoming Artemis III mission, scheduled for 2027. The Artemis III mission will stay in low Earth orbit and demonstrate spacecraft docking capabilities. The Artimis IV mission, planned for 2028, will return humans to the lunar surface for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission. On Tuesday, NASA officials revealed who will be on board the agency's next step in a multi-pronged plan to land astronauts on the moon.
"Since adding the Artemis III test flight before our first crewed Moon landing, our team is focused on developing the mission to test about as much as we can," Artemis lead Jeremy Parsons said. NASA Astronauts Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano won't fly to the moon or land on its surface, but their Earth orbiting mission will be crucial in practicing how to dock the Orion capsule with two lunar landers aboard.
Artemis III is an incredibly exciting, complicated, and highly coordinated multi-launch campaign. It’s going to happen in a short period of time with three of the world’s most powerful rockets," Parsons said.
"While Artemis II was all about Moon Joy, Artemis III will be all about Earth Joy," NASA Science Lead Nicky Fox explained. Artemis II's record-breaking trip Both Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin are in the race to deliver the lunar landers with the two-week demo targeted for 2027.
