Satellite images show a remarkable turnaround for a lake long affected by droughts—the fastest recovery in the lake's history.

After years of severe drought and plummeting water levels, southern California's Lake Casitas has experienced a dramatic resurgence.Following two consecutive wetter-than-average winters, the lake reached its full storage capacity in April 2024 for the first time in nearly two decades. This was a sharp turnaround from November 2022, when Lake Casitas had dropped to historic lows, holding less than 30 percent of its capacity.Images captured by the NASA–U.S.

Similarly, Big Bear Lake in Southern California rebounded to its highest level in a decade in May 2024 after hitting record lows in 2018.The recovery has been bolstered by atmospheric river events, which deliver intense rainfall over short periods.Speaking of the atmospheric river events in November, Michael Anderson, California's state climatologist, previously told Newsweek that some locations saw over 15 inches of rain, up to 40 percent of their annual precipitation, in a matter of days.
