Under the county’s new voting system, in use since 2019, a voter registered in Bexar County can cast a ballot at any of the 279 locations. High-profile contested races in the joint Democratic and Republican primary include nominations for four congressional seats; governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and land commissioner; and Bexar County judge, county clerk and county party chair.
The 11 days of early voting in Bexar County ended strong Friday, with more than 20 percent of early in-person ballots cast on the last day — 21,407 of the 97,653 ballots in both parties. It was a lower turnout than the 122,159 early primary ballots cast in 2020, a presidential election year, but more than the 93,101 in the 2018 primary. Republicans cast 47,169 ballots in the February early voting.
Voters must show a photo ID at polling sites, but they don’t need to have their current voter registration card. The Bexar County Elections Department began mailing out new voter registration cards on Feb. 11. Because of the pandemic, completion of U.S. Census data was delayed, resulting in a longer timeline for distribution of registration cards.VIA Metropolitan Transit, through its Ride VIA to Vote initiative, will offer free rides Tuesday to people going to the polls.
