Naperville sees huge $1.4B growth in retail sales over past decade: ‘Naperville is now the retail mecca’
Thanks to Naperville's wide variety of upscale, ethnic and organic food stores, the city had $332 million in grocery sales last year -- more than any other suburb in the Chicago area, a new report says. While most communities are trying to lure their first Amazon Fresh store, Naperville has two, one of which can be seen here.
“Naperville is now the retail mecca, overtaking Schaumburg in total retail sales,” said John Meliphany, who produces the annual report.The addition of a second Costco store in Naperville is one of many factors that has helped contribute to the city seeing $1.4 billion in retail sales growth over the last decade.
Nearly half the $1.4 billion increase can be attributed to Naperville’s strong showing in automobile and gasoline sales, which rose from $1.2 billion in 2013 to $1.8 billion in 2022. The next highest decade change was Aurora, which saw $102 million in sales growth since 2013. But the neighboring city’s dining and drinking sales in 2022 added up to $304 million, or $200 million less than Naperville.Naperville continues to rank first in grocery sales compared to any other suburban community, with food store sales of $453 million.People line up outside Ramsay’s Kitchen in downtown Naperville on its opening day in May.
