Wimbledon will be without two of the biggest stars in tennis as Naomi Osaka—who last monthciting mental-health concerns—and Rafael Nadal announced plans to skip the tournament.
Osaka said she would return to the court at the Tokyo Olympics, which begin in late July. At Roland-Garros, she had chosen not to participate in news conferences, causing the four Grand Slam tournaments to fine her and even threaten her with a ban. She pulled out of the tournament just 24 hours later,“Naomi won’t be playing Wimbledon this year. She is taking some personal time with friends and family.
Her return in time for the Olympics, however, answers one of the biggest questions that has hung over since Roland-Garros. Osaka, the highest paid female athlete in sports, is also Japan’s most prominent athlete. And ever since she powered her way into the tennis elite three years ago, she has been on track to be one of the faces of the Games.
