Appropriately enough, “The Art of Power,” Pelosi’s new memoir about her time in Congress, is also best read at a subtextual level. Arriving now, after the conclusion of Pelosi’s second tenure as the Speaker of the House, it feels, inevitably, like a statement about her legacy.
We get the sense that, although Pelosi does not say so explicitly, the Obama White House could be both idealistic, even naïve, in its rhetoric and yet also too quick to fold in negotiations. As with nearly all powerful institutions, understanding Pelosi is an exercise in political cryptology. She wants us to know that she was pulling the strings all along, but she wants us to search around for a bit before we find her there, behind the curtain.
