Former Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley will be the Democratic nominee for Ohio governor this year, easily fending off ex-Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley in Tuesday’s primary election, according to the Associated Press. Details:

Cranley released even more policy proposals, including legalizing recreational marijuana , taxing natural-gas companies to pay lower-income Ohioans $500-per-year, temporarily lowering the state’s gas tax, and firing every member of the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio in the wake of the House Bill 6 scandal.

However, Whaley repeatedly criticized Cranley for his past opposition to abortion, touting herself as the only candidate running for Ohio governor, from either party, who has supported abortion rights their entire career. Cranley, who picked Democratic state Sen.

last month claiming Dayton “declined” under Whaley. The mayors of Columbus, Akron, Dayton, Toledo and Youngstown urged Cranley to take the ad down, calling it “divisive rhetoric.”
